The publishing business.

The Ones That Got Away

I take the business of endorsing other authors very seriously, because I feel so fortunate to have had support from some of the most important writers working today.  Harlan Coben, Lee Child, Michael Connelly, Laura Lippman, Karin Slaughter, Tess Gerritsen, Lisa Gardner, Jeff Abbott, and other fantastic authors have all taken the time to read my novels and offer their kind words.  And every single time I am humbled and washed over with gratitude.  These are some of the writers who I most admire, and who have inspired me to be the best writer I can be.  And to have their names on my book jackets, well, it never fails to blow me away.

My Virtual Book Tour

So, I’m not on the road this year — not on the “real” road. I still consider myself to be on tour, though. Virtually. I am quite high tech these days.

At first it felt very strange to be staying home as BLACK OUT approached publication; I’ve been heading out, visiting stores and meeting readers and booksellers for the better part of six years. I’ve toured twice with my daughter at age 4 months for BEAUTIFUL LIES and just over a year for SLIVER OF TRUTH. I knew taking her on the road at two and a half would be really too hard for me, and unfair to her. And I’m not hardwired to leave her. So, I made this radical decision. Lucky for me, my publisher agreed.

Authors and Friends

I was recently interviewed for a major magazine and one of the questions concerned my favorite authors. Space being what it is in these things, this part of my answer didn’t make the final cut:

Some of my favorite contemporary writers in the genre are Tess Gerritsen, Harlan Coben, John Connolly, Lee Child, Lisa Gardner, Margaret Coel, Jeff Abbott, and Joseph Finder – I could go on … Okay, I will! I have read just about everything Stephen King has ever written. Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell have achieved a sort of goddess status in my mind.

The Journey: From Aspiring Writer to Published Author

By

Lisa Unger

I used to give this talk with some regularity when I was just starting out as an author. I chose this topic because my journey is somewhat unique, because I have a great deal of experience in the publishing industry, and because initially people weren’t that interested in hearing from an unknown author who managed to get herself published. Sad but true!

I don’t give this talk as often any more; my appearances are generally more focused on the book I’m hawking at any given moment. But themes from this talk come up again and again. And I hear from enough aspiring writers here and www.myspace.com/authorlisaunger with the same thoughts and questions that I believe this might be of some help.
